Magic themed movies / Documentaries

Post by Chris Aguilar » Thu Feb 16, 2017 12:07 pm

I've been searching out magic themed documentaries (mostly via streaming, Netflix, amazon, etc.) and just watched another one last night.

Magicians: Life in the impossible

I enjoyed it, but noticed some reviews were rather negative for the usual reasons (they didn't show enough magic! The magician's profiled had depressing circumstances, etc).

Jan Rouven (sp?) and his husband come off as self centered jerks throughout and the filmmakers try to humanize them a bit in the end, but it doesn't work knowing that both men subsequently plead guilty to child porn charges.

It is a bit depressing seeing world class performers (Brian Gillis and Jon Armstrong) in less than ideal life circumstances (Gillis' ex girlfriend/performing partner doesn't come off too well) but I think it's nice to know, that in the end, their love of magic centers and gets them through a lot of challenges. Ultimately, I gained a lot of respect for the day to day hardships that these guys weather to make performing magic practical for them.

This is definitely worth a watch and the filmmakers do a great job of getting us to emphasize with the subjects of the documentary.

While not magic, per se, I really enjoyed this documentary about busking and would recommend it.

Several familiar faces on display here from the magic community.

Moving this thread to the public viewable area.

Feel free to add other magic themed movies/documentaries here.

On Amazon Prime:

Magic and Beyond. An older show with some really great performers showcased.

The title escapes me, but I recently watched a doco about Tannen's Magic Camp on Prime.

Interesting, yet depressing, for similar reasons as the Life in the Impossible film.

The "Life in the Impossible" documentary (which I liked, even thought it was a downer) is even sadder for me now with the passing of Brian Gillis. He was so great every time I saw him at the magic castle. My wife and family members were really wowed by his close up work.
