Here's the short form version on applying for membership here.

Please know membership to these forums is limited, so not all (or even most) membership applications are accepted. So, how to increase one's odds? The three steps listed below are mandatory.

  • Use your real name as your user name. (Pseudonyms or "cute" user names get deleted immediately) Use of initials only is not acceptable.

  • Use a proper, non free, non anonymous e-mail address (no hotmail, gmail, yahoo, etc.)

  • Send a short e-mail to me via chris@conjurenation.com with a brief paragraph or two about yourself. Make sure to tell me what name (hopefully your real name) you signed up under. If I don't get this e-mail from you (which also helps verify your e-mail address), your account will not be activated.

The following two are not mandatory, but can often make the difference.

  • Provide me with links to posts you've made at other forums (please do not give me links I cannot access).

  • Have a member (or members) here recommend you. (They need to contact me first, so please no "So and so will vouch for me".)

Below is a longer post with a bit more detail on the above.

Below are the simple steps needed to apply for membership to these forums.

  • Before applying, please remember that the focus here is on on Card Magic. If you're seeking general discourse about all types of magic, I'd recommend another forum (The Genii Forums for instance)

  • Click on the 'Register' button on the left side of the screen and follow the directions to set up your account. It will ask you for a username/password/e-mail address.

  • Screen Names:

-I am now requiring use of your real name or at least a recognizable variation of it (ex. John Smith, John, John S., J. Smith, etc. ) as your screen name. I prefer that all initials not be used as your screen name. Also, please do not sign up under the name of your business/website if you have one. You can put that information in your signature line if you wish, but it's no longer acceptable as a user name.

-Please reconsider if you intend to use a "cute", "clever", or commercially based user name. I have a tendency to delete such applications sight unseen.

-If you feel you have privacy issues necessitating an alias, you may e-mail me before you register at chris@conjurenation.com and I will take those requests on a case by case basis. However, I'll need some pretty compelling reasons to allow new members use of an alias. (for instance, if you are a known (to me) professional and have a performing name, that could possibly be OK. ( e.g Steve Shaw= "Banachek") Something like "Well I use this pseudonym on all the other forums" or "I've been using this pseudonym for years", or "I don't like to use my real name" will not suffice. Thus, using an obvious pseudonym while registering will result in that account being summarily deleted without comment.

-Those who signed up prior to this rule change (1/25/04) will be allowed to keep their current screen names.

-Please do not sign up as a new member using a false name (including those of dead conjurers or other famous performers)

  • I do ask that beginners to card magic and those under 18 years of age do not apply.

  • Please note that registration will not be possible if you don't supply a valid e-mail address. E-mail addresses given are not available to other members unless you explicitly allow it via your user profile page.

Those giving bogus e-mail addresses or not replying to messages sent to the provided e-mail address will not have their accounts activated.

From this point on (1/28/04) I will no longer accept accounts using "free", anonymous e-mail addresses (Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.). This policy does not affect those who have already become members prior to 1/28/04.

Please note that telling me that "This is the only e-mail address I have/use," (in regards to use of anonymous, free e-mail addresses) will not be accepted as fulfilling this membership requirement. No exceptions.

Here's what I mean by a "real e-mail" address. These are e-mail addresses issued by your ISP (internet service providers often give you the ability to have several addresses on one account), a school issued e-mail address, a work issued e-mail address, or an address based off ones personal domain on the web.

I have heard from some that they don't really use/check their "real" e-mail, but fortunately, there is often a simple solution. Simply go into that mail and forward it off to your google, hotmail or whatever you happen to use on a daily basis. That way, you'll never miss those private message notifications, watched topic notifications and so on (of course those are optional).

  • If you register and I don't approve your account within 3-7 days, it's quite probable that I don't have any information about you on which to evaluate your membership request. Feel free to send a brief e-mail to Chris@conjurenation.com letting me know a little bit about yourself, including your experience with Card Magic, your real name, and a valid e-mail address. If you wish to provide links to your posts at other forums or have someone vouch for you, that information can also help me make an informed decision whether or not to activate your account. Please note, simply stating "(magician X) will vouch for me" or "I'm good friends with/a student of "(Magician X)" is not sufficient. That person will need to e-mail me themselves to vouch for you personally. Now since all recommendations are created equal, I make no guarantees of membership in these circumstances.

Membership in any of the various sundry magic organizations is not a factor for me in evaluating potential members.

Please note that failure to provide the requested information in a timely manner (3-7 days) will result in your registration being automatically deleted. Of course you are welcome to re-register if you provide the requested information. Exceptions to this will be made if I know you personally or by reputation. Attempts to impersonate someone else in any way, will result in that account being deactivated.

  • Please note that acceptance as a member means you will be asked to respect the Rules of the forums.
I realize this procedure isn't as convenient as an "instant sign on", but it's how I intend to keep a handle on membership numbers.

I will not sell or use the e-mail addresses in the database for anything other than forums related business (status of forums, private message notifications, watched topic notifications, etc.) Unless you set it otherwise (via the "profile" page), your e-mail address will default to hidden status and will be unavailable to everyone (except myself of course) unless you explicitly set it otherwise

I do require that all applicants be at least 18 years of age and have a serious interest in Card Magic. If you are looking for discussions of other types of magic, or are a beginner (with limited experience) in card conjuring, this is likely not the forum for you.

Please note that the "Members Only" portion of these forums will be not accessible to you until such time that I approve your registration request. This can sometimes take up to a few weeks if I'm really swamped. I reserve the right to limit (and/or) restrict new sign-ups and to end existing memberships if I feel it's necessary. I also reserve the right to decline any application for any reason whatsoever and with no explanation. If your application is declined you are welcome to e-mail me (chris@conjurenation.com) with any concerns you may have.

I'm also occasionally available on-line via the AIM username "sppyress" or the MSM Messager username of "chrisag@hotmail.com" if you have any questions you'd like answered in that fashion.

Thank you.
